Rich Durrell
Rich Durrell is a seasoned leader with a passion for serving his community and ensuring public safety. Born in 1969 and raised in the East County of San Diego, California, Rich graduated from Granite Hills High School in 1988. His journey in the fire service began in 1986 in the rural areas of East County San Diego, where he developed a deep commitment to firefighting and emergency response.
In pursuit of excellence, Rich attended the Heartland 15th Fire Academy in 1990, where he honed his skills and acquired the knowledge necessary for a successful career in the fire service. Following his academy training, Rich embarked on a unique adventure, spending a year working on commercial fishing boats in Alaska in 1992. This experience instilled in him resilience, adaptability, and a strong work ethic.
Rich's diverse background also includes a construction background, which further enriched his skill set and prepared him for the challenges he would face in his firefighting career. In 1993, he was hired by the Sycuan Fire Department, marking the beginning of a distinguished career path.
Throughout his tenure with the Sycuan Fire Department, Rich demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and dedication to his craft, earning promotions through the ranks to eventually become a captain. Additionally, he obtained his paramedic license, enhancing his ability to provide critical medical care during emergencies.
In 2000, Rich transitioned to a role as a single-role paramedic with Rural Metro in the city of San Diego, where he continued to make significant contributions to public safety. His exemplary performance and leadership caught the attention of the San Miguel Fire District, leading to his recruitment in 2004.
Rich's tenure with the San Miguel Fire District has been marked by continuous growth and accomplishment. Over the years, he has been promoted through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Battalion Chief in 2020. In this role, Rich oversees critical operations and ensures the effective management of emergency incidents.
In addition to his operational responsibilities, Rich is highly qualified, possessing certifications as a Strike Team Leader and multiple other overhead qualifications. He is also a State Instructor in eight disciplines, including Fire Control 3, Hazmat FRO, State Academy Instructor/Evaluator, and Confined Space Instructor.
Beyond his professional achievements, Rich is a devoted father to three beautiful children - two girls (Ashley and Lyla) and a boy (Broc). In his leisure time, he enjoys pursuits such as motocross, snowboarding, and various sports, which provide him with opportunities to unwind and recharge.
